Hackathon: A Talent Marathon Towards Innovation

What’s the result of a day dedicated to learning, talent, and the desire to go further? Let’s simplify the task and reveal the answer: the result is… the birth of innovative ideas.

Semapa Hackathon is one of the main events of the Future Proof Leadership Program, a training initiative in partnership with Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) aimed at developing leadership within the Semapa Group. The goal is to contribute to Semapa Group being increasingly well-prepared for the new challenges it faces daily. How? By creating a space where people can reflect, question, share, and learn about how teams can be led to achieve extraordinary results in a short period. Additionally, it provides tools for each employee to “be” and “give” their best.

The Hackathon emerges in this training as a disruptive and transformative day for all participants and for Semapa itself. It’s an intense day involving a large “cast”: course participants, master’s, MBA, or undergraduate students from Nova School of Business, and some guests from various Group companies. The challenge is for them to work together with the mission of solving specific problems proposed by Semapa’s executive management.

How Does Semapa Hackathon Work?

Nova SBE randomly forms work teams that collaborate for eight hours to solve the challenges presented. Each edition features different topics that reflect current challenges in Semapa Group companies. The Hackathon’s objective is to develop innovative solutions to the proposed problems that can be implemented in the short term.

In the fourth edition of the Semapa Hackathon, in November 2023, two challenges were presented to eight teams:

  1. Use generative artificial intelligence as a basis for a new organizational and leadership model, allowing teams to focus on higher value-added tasks.
  2. Enhance Semapa as a lifelong learning organization: how to create conditions for employees to stay updated and active for longer in various life stages.

For each challenge, a winning group was chosen and is currently refining the developed solution for future implementation.

The success of the Hackathons has been closely related to collaborative work (within the team) in a competitive environment, as there are several teams trying to find the best solution. The methodology to be followed is defined by NOVA SBE and stimulates creativity and problem-solving with a high degree of difficulty. The Hackathon also allows for sharing ideas and interacting with people of diverse opinions and ages.

Future Proof Leadership Program Assessment

Participants from the latest edition of the Program, as well as from past editions, have valued this training and the Hackathon’ day. The involvement and quality of the faculty and support team, and the structure and relevance of the program have been very positively evaluated. Other highlighted factors were the interaction and sharing of experiences with colleagues from the Semapa Group who, in many cases, had never met before. Typically, participants ask the training organizers to promote reunions to continue the spirit and complicity created.

The Hackathon is an inspiring experience for all participants. It’s also proof that innovation is born from Talent. Or rather, from Talents.
