Semapa: Mergers and Acquisitions as a strategic tool

Investment is one of the pillars for Semapa’s sustained growth and has guided the Group’s activity throughout its existence. One of the most recent examples consists of the latest acquisitions made by The Navigator Company, which highlight the Group’s openness to international investments and the importance of the M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) area as an important part of the strategy. In March 2023, Navigator completed the purchase of the Spanish company Gomà-Camps, a tissue paper manufacturer, which includes toilet paper, kitchen paper, and napkins, among others. In May 2024, the acquisition of the British company Accrol, also in the tissue area, was concluded.

The importance of M&A

M&A is a growth avenue complementary to organic growth. At Navigator, M&A has allowed two important strategic contributions, explains Vasco Pinto Ferreira, Head of Corporate Business Development at The Navigator Company. “On one hand, to immediately enter new businesses and new markets, accelerating the learning curve through the integration of industrial assets and human resources with complementary and distinctive skills in these markets. On the other hand, it allowed us to scale up quickly with discontinuous business size gains. An exemplary case of this is the acquisition of Accrol, which very quickly allowed Navigator to double the size of our tissue business,” highlights Vasco Pinto Ferreira.

Semapa Group: growth and geographic diversification

Witnessing the growth and geographic diversification of its participating companies is very important for the Semapa Group. Joana Reto, Head of Planning and Strategic Development at Semapa, notes that the Group already has a very significant export character, but has “an industrial footprint quite concentrated in Portugal, and we aim to diversify it in the coming years.”

What benefits can geographic diversification bring to the Semapa Group? “This diversification brings new growth perspectives and also new cultures and best practices for the group in areas such as innovation, talent, processes, and technology. It also opens doors for our employees to have an international career.“

New acquisitions, new synergies, and know-how

Vasco Pinto Ferreira also points out that the integration of acquisitions made by the Semapa Group has made it possible to extract good synergies. “For example, we have had the opportunity to share our commercial best practices and margin management, with very good results already in Spain, and we are doing this sharing with teams in the United Kingdom.”

The resulting learning is mutual, adds the Head of Corporate Business Development at The Navigator Company: “We have benefited greatly from the distinctive know-how of our teams in Spain and the United Kingdom, which has allowed us to improve our value proposition and our competitive positioning in these markets.”

In summary, the example of Navigator’s most recent strategic acquisitions reflects the ambition and capacity of the Semapa Group to diversify and grow its participating companies.
