Among the many projects driven by the purpose “Making it Better”, the efficiency and sustainability of the Group’s production units are imperatives common to all its portfolio companies. One of the most relevant projects with this intention is Navigator’s solar park for self-consumption, located in the industrial complex of Figueira da Foz.
Its dimension speaks for itself: 26 thousand solar panels, in a 17 MWp plant, the size of 17 football fields. This venture is the result of a joint project between The Navigator Company and EDP Comercial, and is the largest solar park for self-consumption in Portugal.
With this project, what was already one of Europe’s most efficient industrial units is now accelerating its decarbonisation process. It also shows Navigator’s commitment to reaching carbon neutrality in its industrial complexes by 2035.
Solar park for self-consumption produces 26 GWh electricity per year
The new solar park for self-consumption has the capacity to produce 26 GWh electricity per year — enough renewable energy to power about 10,500 families every year. Besides its size, this park also stands out for using innovative solar panels, with bifacial modules. This technology allows both sides of the panel to retain solar light, thus increasing the park’s capacity up to 30%.
These features enable the supply of over 4% of the needs of the industrial complex of Figueira da Foz and a reduction in CO₂ emissions, in an estimated amount of seven thousand tons per year. These elements strengthen the position of this unit as one of the most efficient in the European context, thanks to the implementation of an investment plan in technologies resorting to renewable sources of energy.
A prime example of this investment is the fact that this industrial unit includes the first integrated pulp and paper factory of the Group, which resorts exclusively to electricity from renewable sources.
The commitment of carbon neutrality
Navigator established the ambitious commitment of anticipating the carbon neutrality of its industrial complexes by 15 years, a goal for which it allocated a total investment of more than 150 million euros. By that date, it will have reached an 86% reduction in CO₂ emissions, in comparison to data from 2018, by resorting to cleaner technologies.
Navigator’s commitment is the culmination of a responsible management strategy of the business. “Solar energy is a very important aspect in the Company’s decarbonisation strategy which, by 2030, intends to have renewable energy contributing with 80% of the primary energy consumed. The implementation of this project strengthens The Navigator Company’s commitment to look for solutions for the climate challenge and for a low-carbon economy, with the purpose of increasing its contribution to the creation of sustainable value”, states Nuno Santos, Executive Director of Navigator.
The search for new, more efficient solutions led Navigator to create a biomass boiler, which allowed the replacement of fossil fuels with biomass to generate the electric energy and steam needed for the processes of pulp and paper production. Launched in 2020, this boiler allowed 63% of the global emissions of the Figueira da Foz complex to be cut by 2022, compared to 2018, the base year of The Navigator Company’s Guide to Carbon Neutrality.
This company already stands out for generating over 50% of the energy produced in Portugal from biomass. Actually, it is responsible for 5% of the total production of electric energy in Portugal, generating about 2.5 TWh electricity, every year, with the help of the largest solar park for self-consumption.
