Triangle’s: pioneer in robotic manufacturing of electric bike frames

Let’s think of a bike frame as the foundation upon which all other parts rest, a kind of backbone that not only connects all the components but also supports the weight of the cyclist and ensures stability. For these reasons, the material and technology used to manufacture bike frames are critical points.

There is a Portuguese company whose activity is precisely this: creating aluminum frames for electric bikes that stand out for their high-quality standards. Are you familiar with it?

Electric bike frames: innovative production method

Integrated into the Semapa Group in 2023, Triangle’s was founded in 2015 “to respond to the demand for aluminum frames for electric bikes”, being the first factory in the world to produce them robotically, says Patrícia Villas-Boas, People and Sustainability Director of the company. The manufacturing unit, covering around 20,000 m² in the Casarão Industrial Park in Águeda, is equipped with cutting-edge technology for aluminum transformation through a fully automated welding process.

Patrícia Villas-Boas explains that the establishment of the company involved a significant initial challenge, from an engineering perspective, to master the technical process inherent in producing bike frames using this method. “The aluminum frames from Triangle’s originate from a circular tube that goes through various transformation phases until reaching the final product. For example, some of these tubes undergo 52 different operations, from transporting them between machines to repetitive processes. In other words, forming the aluminum frame is not a simple task.”

With competition predominantly from Asian companies, Triangle’s has advantages due to its location in Europe, which translates into lower logistical costs and the ability to reduce product delivery times, making it competitive. Following the acquisition by Semapa, the teams have been strengthened with the aim of enhancing the company’s growth.

Values and purpose of Triangle’s

Currently, the company’s goal is to be a pioneer in the future of sustainable mobility, transforming the way we move and promoting a more connected and healthier future for all. This involves a constant and conscious investment in innovation as a guarantee of a positive impact on the planet, on people’s lives, and on sustainable growth.

This premise involves five fundamental pillars:

1. Safety for all

Triangle’s is committed to providing a safe environment, both physically and psychologically, for every member of our team, customers, and the community at large. This principle is based on a culture of prevention, where everyone is responsible not only for their own safety but also for collective safety. To ensure this objective, continuous training, strict adherence to safety and sustainability standards, and the promotion of responsible practices that guarantee collective well-being are necessary.

2. Courage and achievement

These are the driving forces behind innovation, calculated risk, and overcoming obstacles. From courage comes achievement and the pursuit of excellence and positive impact in the world, through determination to reach ambitious goals and the ability to adapt and thrive in constantly changing environments. This pillar involves leading by example, promoting a legacy of innovation, sustainability, and continuous growth.

3. Dynamic commitment

This represents responsibility and active commitment of each individual and the collective towards effective communication and collaboration, where unity and team spirit are crucial factors for success. A proactive, action-oriented approach allows us to turn intentions into concrete results.

The importance of this proactive approach encourages us to transform intentions into tangible outcomes, with rigor and a clear focus on the future and growth. Driven by this dynamic commitment, we overcome challenges and achieve excellence through decisive and cohesive actions.

4. Integrity and ethics

Ethics and integrity are the foundation of our deep commitment to all stakeholders. Our actions go beyond mere compliance with regulations, actively seeking to prevent negative impacts on people, society, and the environment. Triangle’s is dedicated to adopting sustainable and responsible practices, with a keen eye on strict compliance with safety and sustainability regulations, ensuring the protection of the planet and contributing to a sustainable and ethical future.

5. Quality and design

Excellence in product creation, a continuous journey of improvement, and a commitment to total customer satisfaction, which involves a relationship of closeness, trust, and humility.

Focus on talent

Maintaining and fostering team spirit within the company is one of Triangle’s objectives. Patrícia Villas-Boas emphasises that “the Talent area is highly valued by the Semapa Group, which also includes investing in the training of our employees. In 2023, we had a robust training programme, and in 2024 we are further increasing our ambitions. We are also fortunate to produce a product linked to sustainable mobility, which is very interesting to work on.”

ESG sustainability criteria at Triangle’s

Triangle’s Sustainability Plan for the Future reflects the company’s commitment to actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on sustainable economic growth, industrial innovation, responsible consumption, and climate action – which involves alignment with the 2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap (RNC2050), with intermediate objectives set for 2030.

According to Patrícia Villas-Boas, “the sustainability component in the cycling industry is already very advanced. There is already a very high social awareness regarding this issue. We have recently undergone a certification process to ensure that Triangle’s is the first company in Portugal to hold this distinction. For us, sustainability is core business”.

As a partner of GRACE – Responsible Companies, Triangle’s aims to help shape a future where “green mobility” is not just an alternative but the pillar of global interconnectedness and ecological awareness within communities, promoting a healthy lifestyle. This objective is also realised through actions that promote sports activities, such as sponsoring youth sports related to cycling and organising sports activities that align with the company’s defined axes.

Social support, diversity, and inclusion

“Social awareness, a value present and practiced since the inception of the Semapa Group, is integrated into Triangle’s activity plan and includes social actions aimed at disadvantaged groups and volunteering initiatives”, highlights Patrícia Villas-Boas.

Driven by the solidity and entrepreneurship that characterise Semapa, Triangle’s aims to lead the evolution in the mobility sector, incorporating sustainable innovation and ethical practices in all aspects of the business, reinforcing this commitment with a responsible governance structure, supported by a culture of diversity and inclusion, recognition of individual value, and continuous development of the company’s talents.
