BEI finances The Navigator Company green energy project

The decarbonization of the industrial processes of Semapa Group is a strategic priority that extends to all subsidiaries of the Group. In this context, at the end of 2023, The Navigator Company entered into a long-term financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (BEI) for an amount of 115 million euros, with repayments scheduled over a period of 12 years. This loan is intended to support the construction and operation of a high-efficiency recovery boiler at the Setúbal Industrial Complex, a crucial step in The Navigator Company decarbonization roadmap. The new boiler, involving a total investment of 136 million euros, will reduce direct emissions of fossil carbon dioxide at the Setúbal industrial complex by approximately 136,000 tons per year, equivalent to 24.6% of the Group’s emissions recorded in 2022.

Green Energy

This green loan is part of the REPowerEU Plan, which aims to boost funding for green energy and support the autonomy and competitiveness of the European Union. “The European industry is transitioning to a circular and climate-neutral economy. This project is a shining example of that, as it enhances the energy efficiency of the factory, contributing to the EU Green Deal and aligning with the goals of BEI” says Ricardo Mourinho Félix, Vice President of BEI. “The EU Climate Bank is leading the way for economic growth while ending dependence on fossil fuel imports through increased energy efficiency and the intensification of production from renewable energies”, adds the Vice President. REPowerEU aims to end the dependence on fossil fuel imports through increased energy efficiency, the intensification of production from renewable energies, and the decarbonization of industry. BEI total contribution of €45 billion to REPowerEU is expected to mobilize over €150 billion in investment by 2027 to support green technologies and the energy independence of Europe.

The Navigator Company: Towards Decarbonization

The need to make a transition to a low-carbon economic model is reflected in The Navigator Company’s Decarbonization Roadmap, which has long recognized its role in mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change. It has positioned itself as a bioindustry on the right side of the future by implementing a new bioeconomy based on the forest, while also caring for its impact. In fact, the company has pursued a strongly decarbonization-oriented investment program, totaling 340 million euros between 2019 and 2028, reinforcing its commitment to contribute to a low-carbon society. In this journey towards a more sustainable future, it initiated an ambitious investment plan in 2023 that anticipates its intermediate emission targets by three years, aiming to achieve the goals initially set for 2029 in its Decarbonization Roadmap by the end of 2026.
