Making it Better Conference 2024: Inclusion as a Priority

The Making it Better Week is an internal event of the Semapa Group that reinforces the commitment to generate a positive impact on people, communities, and the planet. In September 2024, the second edition took place, celebrated throughout the Group, and one of the most significant moments of the week was the Making it Better Conference, held at the Oriental Museum amphitheatre.

The event was broadcast live, allowing all employees to attend regardless of their location, in a universe that brings together employees from fifty-two nationalities. The three themes addressed in the 2024 Making it Better Week were Investment, Innovation, and Inclusion, with the Making it Better Conference entirely dedicated to the topic of Inclusion.

As highlighted by Patrícia Villas-Boas, Director of People and Sustainability at Triangle’s and host of the conference, “We have about 7,000 employees following us through streaming, and we want to embrace this diversity and make it a purpose of the Semapa Group. It’s something we want to live.”

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as a Driver of Corporate Transformation

It was precisely to speak about Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion that Ana Paula Guimarães, partner at McKinsey & Company, took the stage. Between 2015 and 2023, McKinsey analysed the impact of Diversity in the corporate world (in terms of gender parity and ethnic minorities in leadership positions). The latest report, from 2023, showed that the importance of diversity in executive teams has been increasing, with a percentage of 39% referring to female representation (25% in 2020) and the same 39% regarding ethnic diversity (36% in 2020).The report also revealed that companies with higher diversity indices in leadership positions showed a higher probability of growth in financial results.

Embracing Difference

The second guest of the afternoon was Rui Diniz, Executive Committee President of CUF, a leading private healthcare company. Rui Diniz shared his experience with his son Bernardo, who has a disability, which led him to understand the need to create conditions that promote greater inclusion of people with disabilities in society and companies.

Rui Diniz emphasized that the biggest obstacle to Inclusion was fear. He appealed to organizations: “Embrace the challenge. Have the courage to overcome fear. People with disabilities don’t have a voice, and that’s why I’m speaking on behalf of my son Bernardo. Inclusion, although requiring effort and changes in business practices, represents an opportunity for companies to become better and more humane.”

Inclusion is…

A multicultural panel consisting of six Semapa Group employees from various countries discussed the concepts of Equity, Diversity, Sense of Belonging, and Inclusion. The panel unanimously agreed that heterogeneity, in its various forms, allows for the sharing of unique perspectives, enriching the decision-making process and fostering a more inclusive and productive environment.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Semapa's Charter of Commitments

In a symbolic and historic moment for the Group, all CEOs of the Group’s companies took the stage to sign a commitment that is divided into seven fundamental principles:

  1. Sense of Belonging
  2. Non-Discrimination
  3. Freedom of Thought
  4. Gender Equality in Various Leadership Levels
  5. Gender Equity
  6. Intergenerationality
  7. Attention to Individual Needs

Including is Making it Better

The Semapa 2024 Making it Better Conference was more than an event – it represented a milestone that affirmed Inclusion as a strategic and non-negotiable pillar for the Group’s future. With inspiring interventions, it became clear that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are not just a matter of values, but a source of competitive advantage and transformation.

The signing of the Charter of Commitments by the Group’s leaders marked the beginning of a new era, where Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are drivers for innovation, sustainable growth, and social impact. This meeting not only celebrated the plurality of voices in the Semapa Group but also challenged each employee to do more and better.
